May Update from Harley

Below you can find an update from Harley, our missionary in South Africa and hear about how you can be praying for her!

Month 2 comes to a close today and I would be lying if I didn't say I missed you all SO very much!! In the past weeks I've taken some pretty big steps to make this place a home..like purchasing a car...and learning to drive it on the left side of the road!!

I can feel myself growing and stretching as I've become more familiar with the city and began spending my days going out and ministering to people. As I continue to get to hear so many of their stories, my heart and my perspective are consistently moved and with a need that is so great. I have never been more convinced that Jesus really is the hope of the world!

My hope was stirred this past month when we invited students to come on a weekend retreat to take a break from the enourmous pressure they face, to rest, and find encouragement in Jesus! Because the majority of our students are not only first-generation college students, but also the first-generation in South Africa born after segregation was legally ended (although many of them still live in segregated poverty-stricken communities), there is a crazy amount of pressure to succeed in college to better their lives, the lives of their parents, and extended family members. The pressure heavy atmosphere leaves UCT known as a campus full of depression and mental health issues in a way that I have never seen before. Yet in this place Jesus has begun to set people free, and my hope has been radically stirred as I've watched students encounter Jesus and community. We've seen them began to open up and experience LIFE for the first time in ages! People who came in isolated and weary left full of joy and with a support system, and we are praying for more and more breakthrough to flood the campus as God's grace and love brings LIFE and JOY!

This is just one of the many reasons I am falling more and more in love with God's heart for the people of South Africa, here are a few other highlights from the past month!

This is Sekela, she leads one of our small groups, is from Kenya, and I am already trying to convince her to come back home with me.

These two ladies are responsible for keeping me fed most weekends as I run around and they never fail to have a smile on and hug me on my way in and out. Despite unfair wages, they work with dignity and joy and light up the room!! They are from Zimbabwe!

Ways to Pray for Me:

  • Pray that joy would be new every morning!
  • Pray for health and rest in my body
  • Pray for discernment to heat Holy Spirit and obey as I share about Jesus!
  • Pray that God would prepare people's hearts in advance
  • Pray that my new friend "N" would come to know Jesus! (Specifically that she would have a dream of Jesus as the Son of God)

Ways to Pray for Our City/Church

  • Pray for full and complete freedom from depression and self-harm for both our students that love Jesus and those who do not yet know him!
  • Pray that our small groups would grow and multiply!
  • Pray for healing and unity for our city!
  • Pray for financial provision for our church, specifically for our church building rent.

Thank you all so much for loving me and praying for me! I hope you enjoy these highlights and I plan to send out another email soon with ways that you can be praying for me and for the local church! I LOVE YOU DEARLY!!
